Warehouse Improvement Project: A Lean Transformation in the Windy City

In January 2024, amidst the frigid winds of Chicago, I embarked on an ambitious warehouse improvement project. The objective was clear: to completely revamp the entire warehouse space with minimal disruption to business operations. As the project lead, I was entrusted with guiding a dedicated team of 15 individuals, ensuring that the overhaul was completed within the designated timeframe.

Project Overview

Leading this project required meticulous planning and coordination. The scope of work was extensive, involving collaboration with various specialized teams:

  • Electrical Team: Tasked with removing outdated equipment and installing new systems.

  • Builders: Responsible for constructing new walls and modifying existing structures.

  • Pneumatic Team: Ensuring all air lines were correctly positioned for optimal functionality.

To facilitate this, I created detailed drawings pinpointing every crucial element. Moreover, I developed a daily action plan to avoid conflicts and ensure smooth operations, particularly important given the multiple teams working simultaneously in the same space.

Daily Action Plans and Spaghetti Charts

Effective coordination was paramount. To achieve this, I implemented daily plans for each team member, ensuring their tasks were clearly defined and executed without interference. Utilizing spaghetti charts, I mapped out the movements of each worker, preventing collisions and optimizing their workflow.

Lean Engineering and 5S Methodologies

The core of the warehouse transformation was guided by lean engineering principles. This approach aimed to minimize unnecessary movements, thereby boosting productivity. Additionally, I incorporated the 5S methodologies to maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace:

  • Sort: Eliminating unnecessary items.

  • Set in order: Organizing tools and materials for easy access.

  • Shine: Keeping the workspace clean.

  • Standardize: Establishing procedures for maintaining order and cleanliness.

  • Sustain: Ensuring ongoing adherence to these practices.

Visual guides were placed throughout the warehouse to illustrate the desired state of workstations at both the beginning and end of each day.

Achievements

The implementation of these methodologies and careful planning resulted in several notable achievements:

  1. Reorganization of Inventory: By sorting and strategically placing items, we significantly reduced the inventory space required.

  2. Increased Capacity: The efficient layout and optimized processes allowed us to increase the overall capacity of the warehouse.

  3. Faster Processes: The streamlined operations led to an increase in the number of daily shipments, enhancing overall productivity.

Hands-On Leadership

Leading by example, I worked shoulder-to-shoulder with my team. This hands-on approach not only motivated everyone involved but also allowed me to address issues promptly and keep the project on track.

Conclusion and Celebration

The result of our collective efforts was a thoroughly modernized warehouse, reflecting improved efficiency and organization. I was immensely proud of the outcome and the hard work demonstrated by the entire team. To celebrate our successful finish, we treated ourselves to a quintessential American experience—watching a hockey game.

I will not share pictures of the warehouse due to client confidentiality, but here's a photo of me enjoying the hockey game for the first time, thrilled with the project's success.

Online Training

In my latest project, I created an online platform aimed at educating students about the MEI EasyFit Trend machine—a cutting-edge technology used in the retail industry. The platform offers a comprehensive online course that equips retail customers with in-depth knowledge and practical skills to effectively utilize this advanced machine.

Through engaging instructional modules, interactive demonstrations, and practical exercises, the course covers various aspects of the EasyFit Trend machine, from its fundamental principles to its advanced features. Students gain a high level of proficiency in using the machine's software, enabling them to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and improve the overall customer experience.

This project showcases my ability to design and develop educational platforms that cater to specific industry needs. It demonstrates my expertise in creating engaging and practical online courses that equip learners with valuable skills and knowledge, enabling them to excel in their respective fields. Through this project, I have contributed to the advancement of retail technology education and helped individuals gain a competitive edge in the industry.

I am proud to include this project in my portfolio as it highlights my commitment to creating impactful learning experiences and driving innovation in the retail sector. It showcases my ability to effectively communicate complex concepts, engage learners, and deliver tangible results. I am excited to continue leveraging my skills and expertise to develop transformative educational solutions that empower individuals and businesses in their pursuit of success.

Regulatory Approval and Compliance for Market Expansion

During my tenure in the R&D department of the company, I played a crucial role in ensuring the regulatory approval and compliance necessary for our products to be sold in the USA and Europe. This project was of utmost importance, as it involved meeting stringent requirements set by regulatory bodies to ensure the safety and efficacy of our products in the market.

As part of the engineering team, my primary responsibility was to oversee the submission process from an engineering perspective. This involved meticulously reviewing and verifying all processes to ensure they were bulletproof and aligned with the regulatory standards. I conducted a comprehensive analysis of work instructions, ensuring their accuracy and relevance to the submission requirements. By working closely with various departments such as designers and quality engineers, I ensured the inclusion of all necessary information in the submissions.

Additionally, I focused on the engineering aspects of the products themselves. I went through rigorous phases of review, meticulously examining drawings, critical-to-quality (CTQ) parameters, and tolerances to ensure they were accurate and in line with the regulatory standards. I also ensured that all contact materials used in the products were specified appropriately within the submission.

Working at a senior level within the company, I collaborated closely with the directors to drive the completion of the submissions on time. This often required putting in long hours and working under high pressure due to the criticality of the project. The company's future success depended on obtaining regulatory approval within the specified timeframe, and I was committed to achieving this goal.

By successfully completing the regulatory submissions on time, I contributed to the company's expansion into new markets and ensured compliance with regulatory requirements. This accomplishment not only allowed the company to continue its operations but also paved the way for enhanced business opportunities and growth.

Overall, my involvement in this project demonstrated my meticulous attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and strong collaboration skills. It highlighted my dedication to ensuring regulatory compliance and played a pivotal role in securing the company's future success in the highly regulated healthcare industry.

Acquisition and Product Integration

In my previous project at Corin, I was part of a significant project that involved the acquisition of Tornier, a company based in France and Ireland. This strategic acquisition aimed to expand Corin's product portfolio and market presence. As the lead engineer in this project, my primary responsibility was to familiarize myself with the products manufactured by Tornier and facilitate their seamless integration into Corin's existing lineup.

One of the key focus areas of the project was the integration of Tornier's flagship products, namely the Dynacup and Double Mobility hip replacement cups. These products were among the top sellers in Tornier's portfolio, and my role involved understanding their design, manufacturing processes, and quality standards. By working closely with the Tornier team, I ensured a smooth transition and alignment of these products with Corin's established standards.

In addition to the hip replacement cups, I also supported projects involving stem implants and knees, ensuring that the engineering activities for these products were completed within the set timelines. This involved collaborating with cross-functional teams, conducting design reviews, and overseeing the manufacturing and testing processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and quality standards.

Throughout the project, I demonstrated strong project management skills and a keen attention to detail, enabling the successful integration of Tornier's products into Corin's portfolio. By completing all engineering activities on time, I contributed to the overall success of the acquisition project, which had a scope valued at 23 million pounds.

Overall, my involvement in the Corin-Tornier acquisition and product integration project showcased my ability to adapt to new technologies and product lines, effectively collaborate with diverse teams, and deliver results within a challenging and dynamic business environment.
